Form, Content, and Subject Matter GENZ 220Z-Art Critique Paper Shelby M. Dykes In this paper, I will discuss the form, content, and subject matter of three different paintings. Each of the paintings represents the following: representational painting, abstract painting, and a portrait. The paintings I have chosen are: Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks 1942, Wassily Kodinsky’s Colour Studies: Squares and Concentrentic Circles 1913, and Pablo Picasso’s Self-Portrait 1907. Representational paintings show clear objects or events and have a clear subject matter in the painting. The subject matter is quite evident in Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks. The subject matter is the dominating, brightly lit diner. The diner is proportionately large. It is built on†¦show more content†¦I can almost picture Kandinsky’s brush moving around the painting in quick, swooping motions. The linear design of the painting is clear with the vertical and horizontal, fine lines painted as squares. Without a doubt, the â€Å"all-at –onceness† of the painting is created by the color. Kandinsky used such a wide range of color techniques that when I close my eyes upon viewing the painting, the image is still present. The colors are bright primary and secondary colors mixed with more earthy hues. The two overlapping circles on the bottom left are made evident by the low value of the green mixing with the saturated red to create almost a black. The contrast created by the black and yellow square touching is eye-catching. The gradation in the upper left square is evident by the continuous changes from the swirl surrounding the circle. It changes from yellow to green, then to blue and back to yellow! Can you feel the excitement in my description? This is what the painting makes me feel while participating. Despite the sectioned off circles and squares, the painting demonstrates unity. That is, the painting forms togetherness, despite contrasts of details and regions. Th e color also helps define the depth. As depth was clearly seen in Nighthawks, the depth of Colour Studie is not as readily evident. Look at the bottom left square. The circle seems somewhat flat. My Ideal City Essay In my ideal city all women will be respected and thought of as wise, intelligent, hardworking, and as having value. Woman would be able to choose any profession they wanted and truly would have equal pay for equal work. Being a mother and caregiver of their children would be realized as a very important position, since they are caring for and shaping the future generations. In fact, woman would be given great respect because they can incubate, birth, and nurse children. Stay at home moms and mothers that work part time would be giving a living stipend so they can stay home longer. All women would have two years paid maternity leave. The women that decided to go back to work would have on-site child care available to them. They would have the ability to go have lunch with their child, check in on them during breaks, or even nurse them throughout the day. If their child really needed their mother or was upset, the mother would not face negative consequences to go see their child. It would be considered normal and encouraged to help their child feel calm and happy again. Work hours would be more flexible with more ability to work from home. A work week would be 30-32 hours a week, rarely working longer with great health benefits, including birth control. I would think that women would have every bit of a chance to get any position in a company as a man as long as she had the ability to do the job and other job requirements. Women would no longer be second shelved though. They would be encouraged to get the necessary requirements in any field. No man would ever feel negative thoughts that he was working or training with a woman. He would just see her as a competent individual. All women would nurse their children unless there was a medical reason that they were not able to. Nursing would be the norm and the expected nutrition of babies. Everyone would know the value of nursing and it would be encouraged. Women could nurse anywhere they could be and would not be forced to go to the bathroom or cover up with a blanket. No one would be offended by something so important. This society would want all of their children to increase their intellectual ability and everyone would know that nursing would help a child to reach that goal. Some women might live in commune type of environments if they wanted. They could live with several of their friends and the women could share the house with each other and their children, while sharing daily tasks. They could enjoy friendships and a sense of community. Maybe the houses could be large enough for their husbands too. It would be somewhat based on the activities of The Farm commune or the shows, Big Love (2006-2011) and Sister Wives (2010- ), without the polygamy, unless of course that is what the women wanted. It could also be a great way for single mothers to be able to pay their bills while still getting housework, shopping, and food making done, along with yard work and home repairs, while having their child cared for by themselves or by a close, trusted friend. One or two women may prefer to work, just like on Sister Wives (2010- ). I kind of feel like men could be optional. Maybe it could be a city that was women only. Of course, they could have men visitors and boyfriends but this city could thrive on women working in the public offices, schools, city workers, as mechanics, in health care, and in grocery and department stores. We have abundant gold, copper, sulphur, and nickel reserves. We are also surrounded by waters due to our archipelagic state which makes us one of the top fish producing countries in the world. Our vast forests also house a lot of plants and trees which help prevent or decrease the amount of flood in our lands. However, in just a short amount of time, our country’s natural resources are quickly diminishing due to environmental problems experienced in the Philippines. Here are some of the major environmental problems in our country today. Deforestation Towards the end of the 20th century, the country’s forest cover dropped from 70% down to just 20%. Aside from vehicles, open disposal facilities greatly contribute to global warming for they become an large source of greenhouse gas emissions. About 1000 dumpsites, open and controlled, exist in the entire Philippines. Studies show that dumpsites comprise 34% of human-related methane emissions to the atmosphere. Methane is more harmful than carbon dioxide in a way that it has 23 times more heat trapping power. The chemical â€Å"dioxin† accumulates in fatty tissues and is passed into humans via consumption of animal products such as egg, dairy, fish, and meat. Water Pollution Bodies of water in our country are polluted by toxic industrial waste and sewage that is directly dumped without proper treatment into these bodies. Just 10% of the total sewage in the Philippines is treated and disposed in an environmentally safe manner. As of 2013, The Manila Bay, which is the country’s most polluted body of water, contains a mixture domestic sewage, toxic industrial effluents from factories and shipping operations, leachate from garbage dumps, and runoff from chemical agriculture. These pollutants produce a high level of fecal coliform, and presence of heavy metals, pesticides, and excess feeds in the water. Damages of the water contamination reach up to 4 billion pesos yearly, mostly in fisheries, exports and mortality costs due to waterborne diseases. Illegal Mining Our country is rich in minerals such as mercury, gold, copper, and nickel which attracts both local and international miners to come to our country. The most controversial mining issue is in the island of Palawan. There are 429 mining claims and applications that threaten Palawan’s protected zones. These zones include 17 key biodiversity areas, 2 UNESCO World Heritage sites, numerous watersheds, endemic flora and fauna and home of indigenous tribes. Palawan mining has caused destructions of its virgin forests and siltation of water sources. These events have pushed local farmers and Palawenos to cry for help for their land. Mining also contributes to air pollution due to the release of greenhouse gases such as methane from mine explosions and water pollution due to contamination of water which increases its salinity.
